Roman Legionary by Hrivalasse Roman Legionary by Hrivalasse
Allright, this poor guy just had to be finished after 7 1/2 months. I gave up on him several times. I have too many issues with this doll to name all and this poor man deserves better, but otherwise he probably would have died in my doll folder if I had put him off again.
I tried to make everything he's wearing and carrying as accurate as possible to the early 1st century AD. I somewhat gave up accuracy on his shoes. I called their main layer in photoshop 'FUCK THIS SHIT!!', if that's any indication of my sufferings. His gladius (sword) looks too small. I hope, for his sake, that nothing else about him is too small. I don't even want to know XD

Awesome work! Your suffering was not in vain, brother!

BTW, also, I like the decision to go with the Lorica Hamata, as I think the Segmentata is overused!

I suggest you keep working. No matter how long it takes, I want total perfection! Until you complete this, I will neither favourite this piece nor watch you.

I don't tend to aim for perfection in my hobbies (i.e. drawing digital dolls). If this was an illustration to be shown in an academic publication I certainly would, but it's not.
Seeing how much love, work and time seem to be put into your own pieces, one must wonder how you even find the time to comment on deviations which don't please you.

That's just awesome! All the detail (and the hairy legs! :D), it's just... Wow! If I ever tried something like that I'd use far more than 7 and a half month.

THIS. IS. AWESOME. All your suffering was not for naught!

As a lover of 1) male, 2) historic, 3) detail-oriented dolls, I am totally crushing on this. Textures, man. TEXTURES. Yowsa. Also: this may be the first male doll I've seen with hairy legs, and it surprises me to say this, but . . . . it looks so much better that way!

The details were a lot of work but also very enjoyable. Somehow I like pixeling or drawing those small things much better than doing the actual shading on clothes and stuff :D
And the hairy legs, well I thought it would look totally weird if he was all realistic but looked like he shaved his legs every day XD I guess it's allright to leave female bases hairless but on male dolls it seems just a bit weird to me.

Wow, I'm really impressed. My WIPs get deleted after that many months if they aren't working! Anyway, from my ancient historical obsession I had a little too much excitement seeing a real Roman legionary in my inbox. And he looks fantastic. I've been wanting to attempt armour for years but always been too scared. You pulled it off superbly - particularly the chainmail.

I always keep my WIPs, even if I don't intend to ever finish them, I just like to laugh at my old stuff :D
The key to armour is daring to make it super shiny and contrasty. I did it mostly by trial and error :D
The chainmail was achieved with different patterns, blurring, blending modes and other dirty tooler's tricks, hehe. And I put a lot of work in it after Dolaria said about my first attempt: 'looks like noob chainmail' :D

That's a good way to work - keeping your WIPs but I normally just have one piece that I'm working on and if I leave it for months it'll always be at the early stages, when it looks crap and is not motivating me. I don't think I ever want to see these! If I'm going to continue, I'll only leave them for weeks. Theoretically. I can't believe how fast most dollers work though. Any doll of mine always takes a couple of months.

I'll take note of the chainmail tips. It's always a second attempt which you don't give up with that ends up looking the best, isn't it?

Thanks for the watch btw.

He's STUNNING!! As a history buff, especially of Roman times, I can tell you he looks pretty damn accurate. Gladius's were smaller than most people think as the ave Roman citizen male was roughly 5"6. The sandals look good although they also wore wool socks with them for padding and heat :)

I really love this doll!

Thank you :D
I actually checked how long Mainz type gladii were on average and how long that would be on the doll XD It was difficult though, doll measurements are...different.
Maybe he'll someday get socks and a cloak too, so he can survive beyond the alps XD If I can be bothered. Poor guy.

You're right! XD He has become so humble in my WIP folder that he had given up all hopes on ever being referred to as something other than 'that unfinished roman guy'. Sad story actually.

you can give him a cognomen meaning "humble" or "unfinished" or something similar :P
